The prekindergarten classroom emphasizes kindergarten readiness. There are many activities each day that focus on academic, social, emotional and physical goals as outlined in Virginia’s Foundation Blocks for Early Learning. These goals are provided by the Virginia Department of Education.
We use several curriculum materials for PreK including Zaner-Bloser Handwriting Journal and Manual. In addition, Handwriting Without Tears is utilized as necessary in helping students with handwriting skills. We also use Hooked on Phonics: workbook(s) involving reinforcement of basic sounds, development of fine motor skills, reinforcement of left-right progression, auditory and visual discrimination. There are also computer-based phonics programs included for further instruction in the classroom.
As in other preschool classrooms, computer time, Spanish, science, music and world awareness are taught.
PreK students are tested twice yearly in fall and spring using PreK Pals testing to assist in determining kindergarten skills and readiness.
